Mario. Ixxina. Stella. Bombolotto. It turns out that most of us at Italian Connections HCB can’t resist giving our cars a nickname. Maybe that’s what makes us so sympathetic towards people who want to bring their own beloved vehicle with them when they move to Italy.

The decision to bring your car with you isn’t just a question of finance. There’s a lot to be said for familiarity, too. If you’re happy with your car and you wouldn’t be able to buy it again for the same price once you’ve moved, it makes sense to consider bringing it with you. However, Italian administration doesn’t make it easy and that can put a lot of people off.

Let’s take a look at the main issues involved in car registration:

Firstly, you must be an Italian resident to register a car. Formalities for residency can be tricky and applications must be filed in Italian, which can make things even more complicated. (Fortunately, the team at Italian Connections HCB can help as that’s one of the administrative services we offer.)

Secondly, the documents, procedures and offices involved in car registration may differ depending in which Province and Region you live, adding an additional layer of complexity.

In addition, customs and VAT have to be checked for all foreigners and Brexit also plays a part in defining the regulations. For example, if you are from the UK and moved to Italy before December 31 2020, your customs and VAT will be verified. However, if you arrived in Italy after January 1 2021, the process is more complicated and may incur a fee. Add Italian bureaucracy, meetings, checks and the very long list of documents that you have to provide at each step of the process in order to advance to the next, and you can start to see why registering your vehicle in Italy can be quite discouraging, even for Italians. It is often said that what you need most is patience!

So if you are dreaming of registering your beloved family car, classic car or motorbike in Italy but worried that it may be a little too challenging for you, don’t worry. We can provide invaluable support and guidance every step of the way and handle most of the process for you. We can also help with shipping.
